How did Rosenberg develop?
Members of Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred settled the area around 1823. The town grew from a railroad decision. Richmond refused right-of-way to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. The railroad built about three miles west instead. A station opened in 1880 and a post office in 1881. The Santa Fe platted the town after the railroads arrived in 1883.
The town is named for Henry Rosenberg, a Swiss immigrant who settled in Galveston. He was president of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe from 1874 to 1877. The Santa Fe and the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio met at Rosenberg. The New York, Texas and Mexican Railway, called the Macaroni Line, had its headquarters there. The Union Depot was built in 1889. Rosenberg incorporated in 1902.

The Richmond-Rosenberg Local Government Corporation acts for both cities on a regional water system. It helps them meet groundwater reduction plan benchmarks.
